Senshu Park in Akita: Fresh Greenery and the May Breeze

Senshu Park

One of Akita City’s tourist attractions is “Senshu Park”—a wonderful park remade from Kubota Castle of the Akita Satake Clan that locals still love today as a place to gather and relax. Strolling through it in fresh green May, feeling the refreshing breeze, makes for a delightful time in Akita.

From Senshu Park’s Many Stairs to the “Front Gate”

Stairs leading to the main gate

Senshu Park was originally a castle—Satake’s famous “Kubota Castle.” Castles naturally sit on “high ground,” and Senshu Park has plenty of “stairs” once you’re inside. The stairs from the park entrance to the “Front Gate” are wide, pleasant ones wrapped in green; there are many steps, but the slope is gentle, so climbing slowly while breathing the fresh green air feels comfortable.

A tree stretching high toward the sky

Between you and me, two trees growing high into the sky side by side looked like a pair of legs to me. Beautiful legs, huh (lol). Climb the stairs, and the grand Front Gate comes into view.

The majestic main gate

And naturally, right in front of the “Front Gate” are…

The steps in front of the main gate

Stairs.

Yawata Akita Shrine Inside Senshu Park

Hachiman Akita Shrine

Pass through the Front Gate, and “Yawata Akita Shrine” stands right there.

The Love Fortune at Hachiman Akita Shrine

The “Love Fortune” slip for romance is intriguing too.

Inari Shrine

Next door sits an “Inari Shrine” with a row of red torii gates; my love life—thinking of Akita beauties—is counting on divine help! Put in some effort there…

Bronze Statue of Lord Satake Yoshitaka in Senshu Park

The bronze statue of Akita Satake’s leader, “Lord Satake Yoshitaka,” stands here—it’s backlit, but cool, right?

“Kogetsu Pond” in Senshu Park—Pleasant, Moist Air

Stairs leading to Kogetsu-ike Pond

Senshu Park also has “Kogetsu Pond,” with a fountain.

Koi Chaya

This time, heading down the stairs to Kogetsu Pond, there’s a Koi-chaya (carp tea house)—not a koi-chaya (love tea house)—but it was closed, so…

Vending machine

I took a break at the vending machine beside it. Hydration matters.

Kozuki Pond

“Kogetsu Pond,” with its fountain showering hydrogen ions, is beautiful too—hydration matters.

Senshu Park Highlight: Kubota Castle Osumiyagura via Narrow Stairs

A narrow staircase on a low hill

Strolling through Senshu Park, you occasionally find narrow stairs. Climb these? Want to? End up climbing? But what’s waiting after the climb—nothing? Stairs on a small hill; even if you climb, maybe—just maybe—a dead… end?

More stairs awaited at the top.

What lay beyond the climb was more stairs! Stairs go on forever~♪

The path leading to the Kubota Castle Corner Turret

The stairs end soon enough! Walking the path to Kubota Castle Osumiyagura, wrapped in May’s refreshing green, what appears right in front of you is…

Kubota Castle Corner Turret

Kubota Castle Osumiyagura—reconstructed by Akita City, a building as beautiful as an Akita beauty.

A Refined Tea Room in Senshu Park

Tea Room Information Sign

A sign ahead said “Tea Room,” so I looked “ahead”…

The path leading to the tea room

Where’s the tea room? After walking and walking—and walking some more—there it was.

The entrance to a tea room that evokes *wabi-sabi*.

The tea room entrance has a real wabi-sabi feel.

The wall of a tea room that evokes *wabi-sabi*.

The side of the tea room has that wabi-sabi feel too (lol). Sending thoughts to this wonderful tea room, I daydream about a Satake clan tea party in the Edo period.

Bonus: Coffee at a Café After Strolling Senshu Park!

Coffee while looking out at the park

Though I daydreamed, you can’t drink tea in that tea room nowadays—so after strolling Senshu Park, it’s coffee at a wonderful Akita café overlooking the park. Hydration matters. Enjoy Senshu Park, Akita.

Recommended Izakayas Easy to Enter for “Solo Diners / Solo Drinking” in Akita Omachi Kawabata

Akita’s “Kawabata” is Akita City’s top entertainment district. You can enjoy small restaurants and bars featuring Akita specialties, but for tourists, some places take courage to enter “alone.” Still, on a special trip, you want to savor it. Here are spots in Akita Kawabata that are easy to walk into and enjoyable for solo guests.
