Truly “Senbero”: Places Where You Can Drink Enjoyably and Affordably

The atmosphere of Fushimi Underground Street

Many shops offer sets of drinks and snacks for around 1,000 yen, and even if you keep going with two or three glasses of beer or sours, 3,000 yen is more than enough to fully enjoy—that is part of the appeal. Featured drinks vary by shop, from sake to whiskey, and with many distinct places such as chicken specialty shops and oden shops, you can enjoy shop-hopping.

Fushimi Underground Street Fuses a Showa-Retro Atmosphere with New, Modern Shops

Fushimi Underground Street, where modern shops blend in

Fushimi Underground Street is a place that feels nostalgic yet modern. Just when you sense the good old days, the shops turn out to be modern, showcasing the owners’ wonderful efforts and creativity—a gathering of shops where you can drink enjoyably.

Right in the Middle of Nagoya City, an Underground Street Right Next to Fushimi Subway Station

Entrance to Fushimi Underground Street

Located right next to the East Gate of Nagoya City Subway’s “Fushimi Station.” You can go straight into the underground street after getting off the subway, but heading up to the surface once and then down these (suspicious-looking) stairs into the underground is also part of the fun.

Fushimi Underground Street Shop Experience Reports / Recommended Restaurant

Oden Specialty Restaurant “Getsuran” (Recommended) Visited June 2026

Exterior of Getsuran

“Getsuran” is a cozy shop run by a landlady (Mama) and female staff. The atmosphere is soft, and because the counter runs along the street, you can see at a glance whether seats are open, making it easy for solo visitors to enter and be warmly welcomed.

Of course, parties and groups can also enjoy drinking at the table seats in front of the shop.

Features of “Getsuran”

Thoroughly stewed "Oden"
  • The stewed “oden” is simply delicious and pairs well with alcohol.
  • The landlady and female staff offer a soft, comfortable environment.
  • Because the counter lines the front of the shop, it is easy for solo visitors to enter (you can look inside the shop before entering rather than going into the back).
  • A simple, clean interior, typical of a shop run by women.

Recommended Dishes at “Getsuran”

"Oden Daikon Radish" stewed until exceptionally soft

“Oden Daikon Radish,” stewed until its softness really stands out. The flavor has thoroughly soaked in, and its soft texture makes it satisfying to eat.

Nagaimo Yam with Salted Kelp

The landlady’s handmade “Nagaimo Yam with Salted Kelp” features a crunchy texture that pairs exquisitely with the salty taste of salted kelp. It is an exquisite snack that goes well with beer and shochu, and a must-try.

“Getsuran” Experience Report (Visited June 2026)

On a certain day in June, I visited Fushimi Underground Street for coverage. At “Getsuran,” I could see empty seats at the counter running along the wide-open entrance facing the walkway. Drawn in by the solo-friendly atmosphere and the smiles of the landlady and female staff, I was pulled right into the restaurant.

Since it was an oden shop, I ordered the “2 Oden Pieces + Appetizer + Draft Beer Set” (1,500 JPY). As the conversation picked up, I ordered an additional single beer. Talking happily with the landlady and staff (Miyuki-chan and Yurika-chan) over delicious oden, I had a fun time for a total of 2,200 JPY in just under an hour! It was a great restaurant.

Location and Access of Fushimi Underground Street

Location

Because it is directly connected to the East Gate of Nagoya City Subway’s “Fushimi Station,” you can reach it without getting wet even on rainy days. It is in an excellent location, just one station (approx. 2 to 3 minutes) by subway from Nagoya Station or Sakae Station, making it easy to drop by after work or between sightseeing.

FAQ for Fushimi Underground Street

FAQ

Question

When are the regular holidays?

Answer

Basically, shops are closed on “Sundays and national holidays.” Because Fushimi Underground Street is in a business district, many shops close on Sundays and holidays when office buildings close. Also, on Saturdays only some shops are open, or many close earlier than on weekdays, so visiting on weekday evenings (Monday through Friday) is most recommended.

FAQ

Question

What are the business hours?

Answer

Most shops open around 16:00 to 17:00 in the evening and close by 23:00 (when the underground street closes). Early shops may hold happy hours starting around 15:00, but many izakayas and standing bars open around 17:00. Please note that many shops have last orders around 22:30.

FAQ

Question

Can I use credit cards or electronic money for payment?

Answer

Many shops still accept cash only, so bringing cash is recommended. In recent years, more new shops accept QR code payments like PayPay or credit cards, but “cash only (including cash-on-delivery style)” remains mainstream among traditional standing bars. Especially when enjoying Senbero (with 1,000 JPY bills), preparing plenty of 1,000 JPY bills and coins in advance ensures a smooth experience.

FAQ

Question

Is it easy for women visiting alone to enter?

Answer

It is an environment where women visiting alone can enter very easily. Although the retro exterior may make it seem hard to enter at first glance, there are many open shops where you can see the interior from the walkway, so you can check the atmosphere from outside before going in.

FAQ

Question

Are there restrooms inside Fushimi Underground Street?

Answer

Shared public restrooms are set up inside the underground street. In most cases individual shops do not have restrooms inside, so you use the shared ones in the walkways (such as near the ticket gates). They cannot be described as clean even politely, so please be prepared for that.

Recommended Hotels for Sightseeing and Business Trips in Nagoya

While Nagoya offers an abundance of hotels and plenty of options, accommodation prices have been rising lately, making it harder to find a budget-friendly hotel that truly fits your needs.

To make the most of your stay in Nagoya, the area you should choose will vary greatly depending on whether you prioritize convenience for traveling, want to keep accommodation costs down, or wish to enjoy the nightlife. Booking a place without knowing the characteristics of the neighborhood could lead to disappointments, such as finding out it is much farther from the station than expected or too noisy at night to get a good sleep.
