Highlights of Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Jingu

“Hokkaido Jingu,” the Largest Shrine in Hokkaido

Shrine in Hokkaido

“Hokkaido Jingu,” the largest shrine in Hokkaido, draws many worshippers throughout the year and is one of Hokkaido’s leading power spots. The shrine grounds are large, and the main hall is splendid and well worth seeing.

Souvenir shop, Jingu Sabo

A small teahouse (sabo) is attached, where you can buy soft-serve ice cream and relax at outdoor tables. Good souvenir items (sweets and more) are also sold, so let’s stop by and enjoy. Even on a weekday afternoon, about 20 tourists line up inside this small building.

The plaza in front of the main hall is spacious and relaxing. When the trees on the grounds turn with autumn leaves, they look even more photo-worthy, and the scene paired with the shrine is beautiful—truly embodying Japanese beauty.

“Kaitaku Shrine”—Reflecting on the History of Hokkaido’s Development

In front of Hokkaido Jingu is a small shrine called “Kaitaku Shrine.” Why not pay a visit here as well and reflect on the great achievements and history of Hokkaido’s development?

Maruyama Park, Enjoyable for Strolling Through the Trees

When strolling through the trees within Maruyama Park grounds

Maruyama Park is a fairly large park, and Hokkaido Jingu sits inside it. Just strolling through the trees on the grounds feels like a nature trek and is pleasant—and since that walk also leads to Hokkaido Jingu, you can enjoy both together.

The path leading to the shrine within Maruyama Park

There is quite a distance from the Maruyama Park entrance to the Hokkaido Jingu main hall, but even walking slowly, it takes about 20 minutes. Breathing the fresh air in the park, if you walk at a leisurely pace, you will reach the main hall in no time—so please enjoy the walk.

Plenty of Places to Eat Around Maruyama Park

Exterior of Maruyama Picante

Around Maruyama Park, there are many places to eat—sushi, seafood, soba, and more—but “soup curry,” one of Hokkaido’s famous dishes, is also recommended. “Maruyama Picante,” on the way from Maruyama-Koen Station to Maruyama Park, is one of the recommended soup curry shops.

Maruyama Picanti's Soup Curry

While the flavor is rich and boldly seasoned, that refreshing feel precisely because it is soup is one of soup curry’s merits. The soup curry at Maruyama Picante is delicious too. You can choose the spice level to your preference.

Maruyama Zoo Is Also Worth Enjoying

Maruyama Zoo

Deeper in Maruyama Park is “Maruyama Zoo.” Enjoying the zoo is nice too. However, walking from Maruyama-Koen Station or Hokkaido Jingu is a bit tough; while the distance is walkable, be aware that it is slightly uphill and a bit of a trek.

If you are going to Maruyama Zoo, catching a taxi from somewhere like Maruyama-Koen Station and heading straight there is recommended.

Enjoy Soft Serve Ice Cream at MARUYAMA WAFFLE

MARUYAMA WAFFLE

On the way back from Maruyama Park to Maruyama-Koen Station, there is “MARUYAMA WAFFLE” (next to Maruyama Picante). Ending your sightseeing with delicious soft-serve ice cream is wonderful too. Truly dessert! Be careful—winter is cold!

Sapporo's sushi is undeniably delicious. In the gourmet paradise of Hokkaido, the umami of seafood that has grown robust in the cold northern seas is second to none.

Part of the charm of Sapporo's sushi dining scene is the coexistence of diverse styles, ranging from high-end establishments to casual conveyor-belt sushi spots you can easily drop by. Because seasonal toppings change throughout the year, you can enjoy discovering new flavors no matter when you visit. When you go to Sapporo, be sure to step into a sushi restaurant at least once.
