With a beautiful contrast between the blue ocean stretching out before your eyes and the lush lawns and trees, this is one of Yokohama’s premier relaxing spots. Just sitting on a bench while feeling the pleasant sea breeze or relaxing on the grass lets you forget the hustle and bustle of the city and refresh yourself.

The Striking Important Cultural Property “Hikawa Maru,” Carrying the History of Yokohama Port into the Present

Its large hull floating on the sea catches the eye, making it the symbol of Yamashita Park. You can look up at this luxury liner—once praised as the “Queen of the North Pacific”—from right up close, and take in its overwhelming scale just by walking nearby. You can also go inside and tour the luxurious guest rooms and pilot house from those days (admission fee required).

Note: Closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a national holiday).

A Cafe with a Perfect Location and a Panoramic View of Stunning Minato Mirai Scenery

Within the park, there is a stylish cafe where you can look out beautifully across the water at the skyscrapers and giant Ferris wheel of Minato Mirai. You can take an elegant break with a drink or sweet treat between strolls while gazing at the sophisticated, uniquely Yokohama scenery.

Located in Yamashitacho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, this park stretching along the coast is within walking distance of several stations.

The closest is “Motomachi-Chukagai Station” on the Minato Mirai Line, about a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 (Marine Tower Exit). It also takes about 15 minutes on foot from both “Kannai Station” and “Ishikawacho Station” on the JR Negishi Line, passing Yokohama Stadium or Chinatown along the way.

If you take the Minato Mirai Line from the major terminal “Yokohama Station,” you can reach the nearest station smoothly in about 8 minutes of riding time.

Located in Yamashitacho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, it is within walking distance of several nearby stations.

The closest is “Motomachi-Chukagai Station” on the Minato Mirai Line, just a 1-minute walk from Exit 1. It is also about a 5-minute walk from “Ishikawacho Station (Chinatown Exit)” on the JR Negishi and Keihin-Tohoku Lines, and about a 7-minute walk toward Yokohama Stadium from “Kannai Station” on the JR and Yokohama City Subway lines.

If you are not fond of walking, a taxi is also recommended. We suggest boarding from JR “Sakuragicho Station” and telling the driver, “Pass the Choyomon (East Gate) of Chinatown and drop me off near the Yamashita-Koen-mae intersection.” This drops you off just before the main street; the ride takes about 10 minutes and costs around 1,500 yen.

Brick tunnels throughout the island coexist with pristine nature, creating scenery that evokes Laputa’s atmosphere. The feel pulls you in as you walk. It’s an island tour that’s also just right for a stroll.

The power plant that still supplies the island’s electricity recalls Laputa’s hut. Because Sarushima was a wartime fortress, its chimney is kept low so enemies couldn’t spot it. It looks like a little hut—and it’s cute!

Every time you pass through a tunnel, it feels like a new world opens up ahead—thrilling. You can enjoy a fantastical world woven from the tunnels’ darkness and the light outside.

The Joy of Overlooking the Sea on Sarushima

From the plaza on the small hill, you can overlook the Kanagawa sea. Bringing sandwiches or a bento and eating while gazing at the water in the spring breeze is also nice.

At the tip of the island there is a rocky area. You can fish here too, and several anglers enjoy casting from the rocks.

Right after you arrive on Sarushima, you’ll find its only terrace seating area. Feel free to buy beer, curry rice, or other food at the shop below and eat here. On a fine day, you can enjoy a pleasant stretch in the sea breeze.

Beer and the sea make a picturesque combination! Sarushima itself is small, but it’s mountainous and works well as a short hiking course. If you drink and eat before exploring, you won’t manage the hike—so it’s best to loop the island first, then come back and take it easy.

When you order the Navy Curry (1,200 JPY), milk comes with it. The curry is rich and delicious, and the milk is rich and delicious too. Soaking up the Laputa atmosphere, hiking the island on a bright day, then finishing with Navy Curry plus beer or milk—it’s a recommended Kanagawa spot.

Tips for Strolling Sarushima

Sarushima has a mountain at its center. The path is just right as a hiking course, but in spring or summer it gets quite hot—without water you might collapse. Bring drinks in a water bottle, or buy plastic bottles at the only vending-machine area by the island entrance.

It gets so hot that heatstroke is a real concern. Collapsing mid-stroll would be serious, so bring easily absorbed sports drinks such as Aquarius. Vending machines are only at the island entrance—there’s nowhere to buy drinks while you walk—so if you haven’t brought any, be sure to pick up one or two bottles here and take them with you.

Access and Location of Sarushima

From Yokosuka-Chuo Station to Mikasa Pier—Then by Boat to Sarushima

The nearest station is Yokosuka-Chuo on the Keikyu Line (about 50 minutes from Shinagawa). From the East Exit—marked in huge letters so you won’t get lost—it’s a 20-minute walk to Mikasa Pier, where boats to Sarushima depart. (It’s fairly far, so a taxi is recommended.)

Head straight through Shopping Plaza Mikasa. This shopping street is also the start of a small adventure! (Lined with many attractive shops.)

Pass through the arch toward Mikasa Park (Mikasa Pier) and keep going straight—you’ll reach the Yokosuka U.S. Military Base. That’s U.S. territory; the land is Japan, but inside the premises it’s America, so please don’t casually take photos or wander in.

Follow the road around and you arrive at Mikasa Park, home to the Battleship Mikasa. Yay—it’s a battleship! Please be careful: barging in carelessly will only get you bumping into the ship! (Nobody does that!)

You can board a boat from Mikasa Pier beside the park—setting sail for Sarushima.

On board you also feel a pleasant sea breeze. The boat is relatively large and stays in coastal waters, so it doesn’t rock much. You arrive in 10 minutes—it’s quick.

When you arrive at Sarushima, a large SARUSHIMA sign welcomes you.

Tourist Attractions Near Sarushima

Enjoy the Battleship Mikasa

Back at Mikasa Pier from Sarushima, the Battleship Mikasa looms large right in front of you. Facing this ship that tickles the inner eighth-grader in you, guys will surely get sparkling eyes—and girls will surely narrow theirs, staring intently at your face! If you came on a date, use all your powers of persuasion to get your girlfriend aboard for a look at the Mikasa.

You’ll surely be surprised by how huge the main battery is. It’s worth a look! The Battleship Mikasa and its main guns, which likely saw action in the Russo-Japanese War, now help convey history and remind us of the importance of peace.

Climb up to the topmost bridge and you feel as if you’re steering the Battleship Mikasa. It’s quite high, so those who dislike heights should take care.

An Open-Air Bath Overlooking the Sea—A Short Train Ride Away (Maborikaigan Station)

If you still have energy left, hop a train or drive a few stations ahead to Maborikaigan Station and head to a super public bath with an open-air bath overlooking the sea—perfect for washing away the day’s sweat and refreshing yourself.

It’s far from the station, so calling a taxi is recommended. The super public bath “Yura no Sato,” about 1 kilometer ahead, is the spot. Wash away the day’s sweat in an open-air bath overlooking the sea, a sauna, or bedrock baths—then, after a relaxed soak, a quick beer at the seaside eatery is absolute bliss.

Taking it easy with a beer while gazing at the sea is the best. It’ll be a great day.

Tokyo Date Course Overview (Around Tokyo Bay Course)

Start by Riding the Yokosuka Line Green Car from Tokyo Station

This one-day date course loops around Tokyo Bay—and it starts at Tokyo Station. The Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station is a landmark of Japanese architecture, well worth seeing from the first step. The contrast between Tokyo Station’s historic exterior and Marunouchi’s modern buildings is quintessential Tokyo.

The arches on the ceiling at Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi North Exit are beautiful and worth a look. Snap a photo for Instagram and you’ve got a photogenic shot. Taking pictures of each other can be fun, too—just watch the angle, since you’ll be shooting upward.

Heading from Tokyo to Kamakura, you board the Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Station’s deepest underground platform. Getting down there is simple—just take the escalator.

Since you’ve put real effort into this day-off trip, relax in a Green Car (you can drink beer, too). In the Green Car, hold off on the bento and stick to drinks like beer—delicious food is waiting later in the itinerary.

First Stop: Kamakura Sightseeing—Fun Every Time You Go!

You arrive at Kamakura Station in about 1 hour from Tokyo Station on the Yokosuka Line. The moment you step off, your mood switches to travel and sightseeing mode. It’s such a wonderful town that you think, “I want to live here someday.” Exit Kamakura Station and head toward “Komachi-dori.”

Stroll enjoyably along “Komachi-dori” from Kamakura Station toward “Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.” It’s a narrow path crowded with school-trip students, but the real goal is savoring sausage grilled right in front of you as a savory aroma drifts under a sunny sky.

Step inside a shop and daytime beer is irresistible. Paired with a sausage snack, it’s unbeatable. The sausage is huge, so even that alone might fill you up.

Is it OK to walk into a German (ham & sausage) shop after coming all the way to Kamakura? That casual doubt stands no chance against a supreme lunch of sausage and local beer. If you get drunk and drop out, the trip you went to all this trouble for ends here—so keep it moderate!

A Kamakura Tip: Pay Your Respects at “Tsurugaoka Hachimangu”

With our stomachs heavy after the sausage, let’s head to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Thinking it through, steep stairs you shouldn’t tackle right after eating are waiting! Maybe we had the order backward!

Kamakura Essentials: “Hasedera Temple,” Then the “Kamakura Daibutsu”

Ride the Enoden to “Hase Station”—once you’re on the Enoden, you can’t help wanting to continue all the way to Enoshima to see the sea, visit Enospa (the pool), and catch a glimpse of swimsuits, but today is for Kamakura sightseeing, so hold firm and get off at Hase Station.

Hasedera Temple is about a 10-minute walk from Hase Station. Take it at a stroll. The grounds themselves make a wonderful walking path.

Strolling the grounds wrapped in a colorful, refined Japanese garden, koi dance elegantly in the pond, and in June beautiful hydrangeas bloom proudly.

The garden is colorful and pretty, and so is the vermilion seal office. The palette feels modern—another spot you’ll want to photograph. It’s Instagram-worthy.

There’s an eatery, “Kaikoan,” so let’s take a break. Hasedera has quite a few stairs, and your feet tire before you notice. Rest here!

From “Kaikoan,” the view of Sagami Bay is beautiful. Kamakura beer with dango hits the spot—aah, that feels good.

About a 10-minute walk from Hasedera Temple is Kamakura Daibutsu-den Kotoku-in Temple. Looking at the back of the Great Buddha of Kamakura, you feel the grandeur of the human world.

Sitting grandly side by side. It’s huge! You can actually go inside the Kamakura Great Buddha. With so many tourists, being packed into that narrow interior is a bit tough.

A giant “waraji” (straw sandal) has been dedicated—perhaps for the Great Buddha. Either way, it’s huge.

On to Kurihama—and Feeling the Sea on the Tokyo Bay Ferry

From Kamakura to Kurihama on the Yokosuka Line—buses from JR Kurihama Station to the Tokyo Bay Ferry terminal rarely come, so I think about taking a taxi, but there are none at the stand in front of the station. If you wait for the bus anyway, you might miss the ferry depending on the time, so when you start walking toward the main street out of necessity to look for a taxi, one pulls up at the stand! Waiting quietly is the best choice!

From JR Kurihama Station to the Tokyo Bay Ferry Terminal takes about 15 minutes by taxi. The fare is around 1,100 JPY, so it isn’t that far. From the moment you step into the ferry terminal, the sea breeze—wrapped in the scent of the sea—feels great.

On a weekday daytime trip, it is completely empty. On holidays, the ship fills with people carrying fishing gear or golf bags. Weekday dates are recommended.

Fresh, Delicious Seafood in “Kanaya,” Chiba

The Tokyo Bay ferry from Kurihama arrives at Kanaya Port. It’s a 40-minute boat trip from Kanagawa to Chiba.

Head to the restaurant “The Fish” next to Kanaya Port—a stylish spot overlooking the sea. We ordered a recommended dish, the “Instagrammable seafood bowl,” a seaside specialty.

It comes in a huge shell! The look makes an impact, and the taste is top-notch, of course. Paired with the local beer “Nokogiriyama Beer,” it makes a supreme dinner (they close at 18:00, so plan an early dinner).

After eating, return to Tokyo from JR Hamakanaya Station via the Sobu Line / Uchibo Line. Inbound trains run once an hour, so keep an eye on the time from the restaurant to the station and aim for a departure you can catch. There are no shops around the station at all.

If you mistime it, you end up waiting an hour for a train on a bare station platform… Then when a train finally arrives and you board, the ride back takes two and a half hours, so be prepared (Hamakanaya Station → Tokyo Station)—it’s a long trip where deep sleep is basically required. (On a date, isn’t that last train stretch a bit of an ordeal?)

May 2021: a free-spirited solo male travelogue! After Atami Onsen, I explored Odawara on a 1-night 2-day trip—here’s the real thrill of going alone.

That the post-bath lounge was stacked with manga—and I nearly spent the whole night reading—is an eternal secret.

Can a solo guy cover Atami and Odawara in one night without cramming too hard?

Easily. This real diary packs onsen, kinmedai, and Odawara sightseeing without feeling rushed.

“Atami and Odawara 1-Night 2-Day Hot Spring Travelogue (May 2021)”

Journey 1. Moving to Atami

I was planning to eat “seafood” or “simmered alfonsino” for lunch at an eatery in Atami, so I meant to take the 11:00 Shinkansen from Tokyo Station and arrive around noon—but I ended up more than an hour late!

Nobody gets mad when you’re late—that’s the upside of solo travel—but I get mad at myself!

I almost bought an ekiben on the Shinkansen platform without thinking, but somehow held out. If I ate there, I wouldn’t have room for lunch in Atami! I ended up arriving past 1:00 PM.

I arrived at Atami Station completely starving, and the McDonald’s right in front of me looked way too tempting—but luckily traffic was jammed, so I couldn’t go. Solo travel is full of traps! Eating at McDonald’s would have been fine, but it would have halved the point of coming to Atami.

With a stomach this empty, even these guys look like food! …No they don’t

Journey 2. Lunch is Alfonsino at a Famous Restaurant

Walking along the shopping street in front of Atami Station, a famous eatery featured on Atami guide sites comes into view.

Since I was completely empty (I’d overslept), I walked in without really checking the place (I was late), and they recommended the course—so I picked one with “simmered alfonsino.” I ordered a beer and waited about 10 minutes; the simmered dish that arrived was jet black.

Honestly, the simmered dish tasted fairly salty, so I was glad I’d ordered beer—but it wasn’t very good, so I won’t name the shop.

The course was supposed to come with sherbet for dessert, and I was looking forward to rinsing that salty taste with something sweet and cold—but the dessert was iced coffee!

Doesn’t a salty mouth just turn into a bitter one? Be careful!

Journey 3. Sightseeing in Atami

Atami has a beach called “Atami Sun Beach.” In May, wanting to see the calm sand without swimmers, I left the eatery and walked toward the coast—then realized something along the way.

Atami Station is halfway up a mountain, Sun Beach is on the coastline!

Of course! It’s a slope, right?! Going down means climbing back up on the return.

At Atami Sun Beach, couples were scattered here and there, so I thoughtfully took a photo—of the couples!

It’s “Omiya” and “Kanichi”! And subtly backlit. In the story of “Omiya and Kanichi,” Kanichi kicks Omiya for his own sake—but as an ally of women everywhere, I want to kick Kanichi’s back.

It’s “The Back I Want to Kick.”

Classic beach play means the “brinkmanship game”—and almost without fail, I don’t stop until I get wet.

Journey 4. TEA Time at a Stylish Cafe

After playing in the waves at Sun Beach, I figured I’d head back to the inn—but of course the way back is uphill! Against the refreshing sea breeze, I climbed a mountain-grade slope that came out of nowhere, drenched in sweat, wandering steep little paths for 30 minutes with no idea where the inn was—until my smartphone battery finally died…

If the map (my phone) was gone too, worst case I’d be sleeping outdoors on an Atami hillside! Realizing that (not really going to happen (lol)), I looked around and spotted a cafe.

They said it becomes a “BAR” at night, so I thought about coming back after a soak—but right now I’m gloriously lost on Atami’s steep little paths! I have no confidence I can find my way back (T_T).

Journey 5. Arriving at the Inn

Tonight’s inn is “Oedo Onsen Monogatari Atami,” which I’d reserved. It’s a great-value plan with a “funamori alfonsino” platter, plus all-you-can-eat buffets for dinner and breakfast—I just want to get there fast and wash off this sweat from the hillside climb in a hot spring!

Praying like that and staring at my phone map, I finally arrived—”Oedo Onsen Monogatari Atami” was above me!

Now what? “Oedo Onsen Monogatari Atami” towers far overhead, but there’s no way I’m climbing that stone wall. I checked Google Maps on the phone I’d charged at the cafe and sized up the situation!

I’m torn between going up then down, or down then up!

Thinking I’d go down then up (the blue route), I walked about 5m and noticed a normal “back door.” I’ll go in that way. (Still need to check in, though).

Check-in was at the 5th-floor front desk; I took the elevator up and checked in without a hitch. Out of frustration, I went back outside once to photograph the front entrance—something I probably could have done at checkout on the way out. Hotel staff might have thought, “What is this guy doing?”

Journey 6. Taking a Bath Before Dinner

As expected, I can’t photograph the large public bath, so I shot the post-bath lounge instead! There was a forest of manga—once you wander in, you can’t get out!

Manga is the best!

Gazing at bare-faced ladies in yukata, fresh from the bath and coming out cheerfully, while I read manga intently—it was truly Shangri-La. If I fell asleep like that, I’d miss dinner, so I forced myself back to my room!

Journey 7. Dinner is a Luxurious Buffet

When I got to the dinner venue (restaurant), families, couples, and women’s travel groups had already filled the tables—but I also spotted a solo male guest like me!

A comrade!

I shouted it in my heart, but didn’t actually approach. If anything, the table of two soft-looking ladies in picturesque post-bath yukata had an irresistible scent♡ Looking nervously—isn’t that solo male guest from earlier already sitting right next to them?

He wasn’t a comrade, he was a formidable rival!

There was a funamori alfonsino sashimi platter—and that I thought about bringing the whole boat over as-is is a secret. Destination: the table of that two-woman group! …That would only annoy the people it was brought to.

The all-you-can-eat sushi is delightful too, but with “sushi,” “soba,” “curry,” and “mixed rice,” I worried I couldn’t finish it all. Here, bringing the whole box to the ladies’ table…

Alright already, enough of that!

8 pieces of sushi, simmered dishes, chicken wings, 8 slices of sashimi, steak, tempura, mapo tofu, simmered alfonsino, chawanmushi, tofu, egg tofu, white soup (lol), fruit for dessert—appetite exploded right over romance! If I get in the bath after this, I’ll sink from sheer weight (I ate too much)!

Journey 8. Relaxing in the Room

In a cozy 7.5-tatami Japanese-style room, sitting in the chair by the window, I enjoy the ocean view of Atami.

It was a building view!

On a solo trip you don’t have to worry about anyone else, so I drink while watching a movie (anime) on a tablet in the room, and when I get sleepy, I lie down. Let’s sleep properly in a futon!

Journey 9. Breakfast is Also a Buffet

At the breakfast venue (restaurant), I sat at the same table as last night, the two-woman group sat at theirs, and the solo male guest sat next to them again—I thought they were assigned seats! Breakfast is buffet-style too.

No “greenery”! Man food!

Thinking this food might be what built my “selfish dosukoi body,” I reflect a little—then enjoy it thoroughly!

Journey 10. Moving from Atami to Odawara

Atami to Odawara takes 22 minutes on the local line (Tokaido Line). Even on a local, seats are fairly easy to find, so I let my guard down thinking “If I just sit quietly, 22 minutes is nothing”—then hit a stretch with no smartphone signal (T_T).

You weren’t sitting quietly! You were using the internet.

The paper lantern at Odawara Station is amazing. Leaving the station, I walk toward Odawara Castle.

Journey 11. Odawara Castle is Truly “Mountain Climbing”

Since it’s “Odawara Castle,” a famous Hojo stronghold from the Sengoku period, I figured it was a top-tier impregnable fortress. Looking at the scenery around the moat, I felt oddly at peace amid the graceful view—but one thought hit me: it’s huge, and the main gate is far! Still, walking the flat path along the moat felt good; even in the early-summer heat of May, it wasn’t hard—until I passed through the main gate and realized…

Could it be uphill all the way?

I’m no gutsy hiker—mountain climbing isn’t on my itinerary—but I’d let my guard down. This is a famous Sengoku castle; of course putting the keep on top of a hill makes it harder to attack. Still, having come this far I couldn’t turn back, so I climbed in the early-summer heat of May, reached the keep, and realized!

It’s blatantly a slope!

Thinking “the long-awaited keep” if I just finish this last slope, I pushed myself up, entered the castle tower—and as expected, realized!

After climbing the stairs of a 5-story building with no elevator, there’s an observation deck on the top floor of the keep. Are you telling me to climb five more floors of stairs from here?!

Sagami Bay from the keep’s observation deck is wonderful. Imagining Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s vast army pressing into this bay during the Conquest of Hojo was a moment of sending my thoughts back through history.

Journey 12. A Hot Spring on the Way Back!

I was sweaty from the Odawara Castle climb, but figuring there was no helping it, I headed toward the station thinking I’d eat and head home—when it appeared right in front of me, as if aimed at me!

A super sento appears. Odawara Ohoribata “Manyo no Yu”—as if designed to snare people who sweated it out at Odawara Castle and desperately need a shower, then reel them in. Showing up right before my eyes at this moment is far too perfect!

Morning hot springs in Atami, afternoon at an Odawara super sento—this Atami–Odawara solo male trip is done! Thank you very much!
