• About a 10-minute walk from Hamamatsucho Station on the JR Line and Tokyo Monorail. A very straightforward, easy-to-follow route where you simply walk straight out of the North Exit. Once, in Tokyo’s Shinagawa / Takanawa, there was an overwhelmingly low tunnel known colloquially as the “Obake Tunnel” (Ghost Tunnel). Its official name is “Takanawa Bridge Underpass” (Takanawa-bashi Kadokyo), a tunnel famous for passing under train tracks with an extremely low ceiling.

Due to its low height, the Obake Tunnel broke the roof lights (lanterns) of taxis, leading it to also be called the “Taxi Lantern Killer Tunnel.” There is even a remaining anecdote that taxis operating in Tokyo modified the height of their cars (the height of their lanterns) so they could pass through this tunnel.

In 2020 (Reiwa 2), the roadway was closed. This article introduces photos and videos of the tunnel from back then (when cars could still pass through).

An Overwhelmingly Low-Ceiling Tunnel That Feels Like You’ll Bump Your Head

A Tunnel Where Pedestrians and Cyclists Pass Through with Heads Bent

Because of the low ceiling of the Obake Tunnel, pedestrians had to lean forward and duck their heads, while cyclists had to lean far forward to get through. It was also a tunnel visited by tourists (?) who wanted to get a look at this low height, and many people took photos there.

The ceiling of the tunnel has stepped sections, so you need to be careful: if you walk carelessly, you will bump your head on these protruding parts. The danger rises sharply once you are around 170 cm tall.

This is a video shot while walking inside the tunnel. The photographer’s height is 177 cm, and it was filmed with their head almost bumping against the ceiling.

Taxis Barely Make It Through

It was a shortcut from the Takanawa side to the Shibaura side (sea side) in Shinagawa. If you did not use this tunnel, you had to go toward Shinagawa Station or Tamachi Station and make a large detour. Because it was a famous passage (road) in Tokyo and an important vehicle tunnel, it was used by many cars and taxis.

However, of course only cars with low overall height could pass, and taxi lanterns in particular cleared by a bare minimum (there is even a story that taxis in Tokyo adjusted the height of their lanterns because they often bumped and broke them). Looking at passing taxis, it was an amazing tunnel where you could feel they were passing through on a truly razor-thin margin.

The Low Height Is Clear From the Tunnel’s Entrances and Exits

At the entrance of the tunnel, a height limit (the height limit for Takanawa Bridge Underpass was 1.5 meters) is posted, but even if you know your car’s height is 1.5 meters or under, you would hesitate to enter this tunnel. If the car bounces while driving, it’s over (a bump on the ceiling awaits).

Even at the tunnel exit, its low height (and the danger) can be seen. Cars are one-way (this is the exit), but people can go both ways; entering here requires considerable courage.

Location and Access of Takanawa Bridge Underpass

It is about a 5-minute walk from Sengakuji Station on the Toei Asakusa Line and Keikyu Main Line, and is also within walking distance from JR Takanawa Gateway Station. Located right near the Takanawa Okido Gate Site along Daiichi Keihin (National Route 15), it is easy to access from nearby stations.

History of Takanawa Bridge Underpass

Until around 2019, it was actively used by cars and bicycles, serving as a useful tunnel appreciated by taxis heading toward Shinagawa Station from the Takanawa side.

One Stop from Shinagawa on the Keihin-Tohoku Line

“Oimachi,” just one stop from Shinagawa on the Keihin-Tohoku Line, is a super hidden gem in metropolitan Tokyo that still exudes a Showa retro feel.

Get off at the station, and you’re in a prime spot where you can watch the Keihin-Tohoku Line to your heart’s content. Does that mean anything? Oimachi Station is a bit complex, with two sets of stairs from the platform up to the ticket gates; which one you take completely changes your exit. Futuristic buildings stand side by side, and YAMADA DENKI LABI looms right in front of you in Oimachi.

I also like the downtown-side ticket gate with its Heisei-era feel; since I never remember which is which, I’ll take my chances when I exit.

A Downtown Atmosphere Full of Showa Retro Vibes

Exit at the West Exit (downtown-side ticket gate), make a U-turn toward the tracks, and slip into a small path—you’ll reach the Azuma-koji restaurant district, a back alley overflowing with Showa retro vibes that’s irresistible.

Nostalgic restaurants (small eateries) and drinking spots stand side by side, so it’s fun just to walk around—though on a stroll around 4:00 PM, the shops aren’t open yet.

Ramen shops are open even at this hour. Diner-style eateries and drinking spots are packed with good places still running at old-fashioned Showa prices; Oimachi’s restaurant district is a back alley worth visiting at least once. Walking in takes a bit of courage—but let’s take a leap of faith and go!

If you pass Azuma-koji without going in, there’s a 24-hour, year-round manga café, DiCE—so even if you miss the last train, you’re covered.

Super Public Bath “Ofuro no Osama”

If you want to enjoy Oimachi, the recommended super public bath “Ofuro no Osama” is on the Hankyu Hotel side when you exit the Atre-side ticket gate. Leave by the Central Exit (Atre-side ticket gate), and the first thing that catches your eye is the escalator to the “Rinkai Line”; if you hop on by mistake, you’ll be carried deep underground—so be careful! Boasting a size of 58.3 ha (approx. 180,000 tsubo) and a perimeter of 3.5 km, Shinjuku Gyoen is a wonderful space where you can enjoy cherry blossoms in full bloom—a place where blooming trees and carpets of petals put you firmly in cherry-blossom mood.

Entering the Gyoen, numerous cherry blossoms are in full bloom and beautiful on the wide lawn. In Shinjuku, in the great metropolis of Tokyo, there is such a wonderful space of cherry blossoms and nature. That, too, is one of the charms of Tokyo—and of Japan.

Shinjuku Gate requires quite a bit of walking from Shinjuku South Exit and is hard to find; Okido Gate is on the opposite side from JR, so entering Sendagaya Gate from JR Sendagaya Station is 100% overwhelmingly recommended.

Shinjuku Gyoen’s biggest merit is that an admission fee is charged! This is important.

The admission fee is 500 JPY for general adults—by no means cheap, but not an amount you can’t pay either. Precisely because there is an admission fee, people can enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms with respect and consideration. Many visitors come looking forward to the cherry blossoms, and precisely because of that, it’s comfortable—such a wonderful famous cherry blossom spot is Shinjuku Gyoen.

Bringing alcohol into Shinjuku Gyoen is prohibited. Precisely because there’s no alcohol, the Gyoen has become a garden where you can fully enjoy cherry blossoms. Bringing in bento lunches and sheets is OK, so for couples and families, viewing cherry blossoms while eating a delicious lunch out on the lawn is also good.

Even by mistake, hiding alcohol at the bottom of a backpack or putting it in a water bottle to bring it in goes beyond a breach of manners—so please be careful!

Entering Shinjuku Gyoen from Sendagaya Gate, a grove of cherry blossoms spreads out all at once right in front of you, and if you walk farther toward the center of the Gyoen, there’s a lawn area with all-you-can-picnic. Saturdays and Sundays with cherry blossoms in full bloom are packed with people who spread out mats in the bento lunch zone, but because it’s quite wide, being unable to sit almost never happens. You can picnic to your heart’s content.

Beauty of the Japanese Garden and the Pond Sides

At Shinjuku Gyoen, ponds line up from Kami-no-ike to Naka-no-ike to Shimo-no-ike, and you can enjoy collaborations between ponds and cherry blossoms. The ponds and cherry blossoms seen from the pondside or from bridges form photogenic compositions.

Collaborations between the Japanese garden and cherry blossoms are also beautiful, and the pairing with Yoyogi’s famous pointed building (NTT Docomo Building) is another unique view from Shinjuku Gyoen.

Hydration and Restrooms

Things you worry about when visiting facilities and parks like Shinjuku Gyoen are restrooms and hydration—but outdoor bottle water refillers are installed inside the park.

Next to the outdoor bottle water refiller, a “tap water you can drink” fountain is also installed. Drinking from either is free—and it has its charm.

Restrooms are placed at reasonable intervals inside the park, so basically you won’t be stuck. The restrooms of Shinjuku Gyoen are marked with red circles, so please use them as a reference when strolling the park.

Starbucks Has a Long Queue; the Free Area Below Starbucks Is Comfortable

There’s a long queue for something—it’s the line for Starbucks. The 2nd floor with clear glass windows is Starbucks, and if you could get in and relax, it would be wonderful.

The area below Starbucks is a terrace with benches anyone can sit on, and you can use it without entering Starbucks—so taking a breather with tea in hand (PET bottle) or similar is fully enough here.

There’s a Peculiar Tree Called Cockscomb Coral Tree

At Shinjuku Gyoen, where diverse trees line up and diverse flowers bloom, the rivalry between flowers is also worth seeing—but occasionally you find a “This tree, what tree, curious tree~♪”.

It’s a tree called Cockscomb Coral Tree (Amerikadeigo); there are thorns on the branches and petioles, the flowers are red, and the petals are round. It was introduced to Japan around the middle of the Meiji period.

Strolling Path on the Shinjuku Side—and Nostrils, Not Flowers, Getting Itchy

The Shinjuku side is a strolling path where you can walk while gazing at trees, with fewer people—just right for a trek-like walk. Walking through the northern area “Mother and Child’s Forest,” your nostrils get itchy, and you realize the pollen flying around is no joke.

From Sendagaya Station, it’s about a 4-minute walk after exiting. This route lets you get there smoothly without getting lost, but Sendagaya Station is served by local trains.

Grounds Larger Than You’d Expect: Meiji Jingu

Meiji Jingu—an oasis of rich green grove and forest in the city—is a must-see when you visit Tokyo. Worshiping at the shrine is wonderful, of course, and strolling the tree-filled forest so unlike the rest of Tokyo is just as rewarding. Let’s walk through Meiji Jingu and soak up what makes Japanese shrines special. It’s larger than you’d expect.

The Walk from Harajuku Station to Meiji Jingu Is Already Moving

Several stations serve Meiji Jingu, but the easiest to find is Harajuku on the JR Yamanote Line. Step off the train and you’ll find a bridge (Jingu Bridge) leading straight to Meiji Jingu. Back in the Showa era, the “Takenoko-zoku” (Bamboo Shoot Tribe) would rush to Jingu Bridge with boomboxes, sit down, and spring up out of nowhere like bamboo shoots after rain. In today’s Reiwa era, though, it’s extremely peaceful—no bamboo-shoot hunting here.

Right after you cross the bridge, Meiji Jingu’s Otorii comes into view—pay your respects there as you head in to worship. Feeling the shrine’s dignified beauty, you pray with a mind that feels centered and steady.

Since I’d come all the way to Meiji Jingu, I thought I’d walk grandly right down the middle of the approach—but by the time I realized the gravel in the middle gets into your shoes, it was already in mine. Walk quietly along the stone-tiled edges instead. Everyone else is walking there too.

Walking a path covered by trees so tall you have to look up, a refreshing breeze full of nature’s comfort flows through—it feels great.

It truly feels pleasant—like walking through a forest tunnel in bright sunlight—but if you step into the trees you’ll surely get lost, so be careful! (I won’t go, lol)

Meiji Jingu Museum and Forest Terrace

After walking a while, the sign for Meiji Jingu Museum (General: 1,000 JPY) comes into view. I wanted to see the museum, but I was more eager to reach the main hall—so I left it for the way back and kept heading toward the hall.

As I walk, a restaurant sign comes into view. (Too many temptations!) I definitely want soft-serve ice cream too, and beer seems to be calling—but with unwavering determination, I press on toward the main hall.

Dedicated Japanese sake is lined up right in front of you! Searching for sake from your home prefecture here is an absolute must.

The Strongest Power Spot: Meiji Jingu Main Hall

At the main hall, two large round trees stand on the left and right. This tree, what tree, curious tree~—since it’s a tree whose name I don’t even know~♪

I don’t know their name, but the trees are huge.

Worship properly at the main hall. Something about it deeply touches you and sinks in!

Vast Grounds—Strolling Through Meiji Jingu

Past the main hall, a path lined with trees lets you feel the natural breeze. It’s a pleasant stroll—but note that the path is longer than you’d expect!

Most people don’t come this far, so it isn’t well known, but Meiji Jingu has a greenery-filled lawn. (It’s a hidden gem.)

Beer at Forest Terrace Is the Best

After about an hour of walking the grounds at an easy pace, stop by Forest Terrace Restaurant on the way back for a beer! It’s delicious☆.

Meiji Jingu is in Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo—a green oasis in the city center.

How to Get There:

• JR Yamanote Line: Right from Harajuku Station or Yoyogi Station.
• Tokyo Metro: Right from Meiji-jingumae Station.

Within walking distance of each station—ideal to combine with Omotesando or Harajuku sightseeing.

About Meiji Jingu

Meiji Jingu was founded in 1920 (Taisho 9) to enshrine Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The man-made forest—grown from about 100,000 trees donated from across the country—has now stood for over 100 years and is affectionately known as the “Eternal Forest.”

It’s currently the beautiful fresh-green season, so worshiping in the cool morning hours is especially recommended.

Bonus: Feeling Young on Takeshita Street

Meiji Jingu is in Harajuku—and speaking of Harajuku, it’s Takeshita Street. Walking through Harajuku, where midriff-baring girls and middle- and high-school girls are out having fun, takes courage for an old guy alone—but you absolutely have to go, and you have to eat crêpes. This old guy is sitting on the street eating too. A Meiji Jingu stroll you’ll definitely want to take on a sunny day.

The meeting point is Asakusa’s Kaminarimon. It’s famous enough that you won’t get lost—even a boyfriend or girlfriend new to Tokyo will naturally end up there after getting off at Asakusa Station—so it’s the best landmark for meeting up.

Just waiting at Kaminarimon is exciting, and although there are many people, the crowd keeps moving, so you can find each other quickly. Under Kaminarimon, an exciting Tokyo date day begins—once you meet, head straight for lunch! It’s best to skip breakfast so you can fully enjoy this delicious lunch!

A few minutes’ walk from Asakusa’s Kaminarimon, down an alley, you’ll find a large sign for the long-established Asakusa “Imahan Main Shop”—it’s time to enjoy their sukiyaki for lunch.

At lunch, you can enjoy excellent sukiyaki in the 2,000-yen range—great value—and get excited watching the staff simmer the meat with performance-like skill. A Stroll Through Asakusa Nakamise Shopping Street

After lunch comes stroll time, and Asakusa Nakamise spreads out in front of you. With its many colorful shops and snacks, Nakamise is a fun place to stroll around and explore. Take your time browsing the shops, grabbing snacks along the way, and eventually make your way to Senso-ji Temple, where you can stop and pray together.

Sumida River Water Bus: Cruise to Takeshiba Pier

After your stroll, head toward the famous landmark at Asahi Beer’s Asakusa headquarters and the water bus boarding area comes into view. Taking the water bus down the Sumida River from Asakusa out into Tokyo Bay to Takeshiba Pier isn’t just a convenient way to get around—it’s also a mini sightseeing cruise.

If you are lucky, you might ride a boat designed by Leiji Matsumoto. On board, sip tea and rest your tired legs after walking around Asakusa—a relaxing time together.

A Short Stroll Around Takeshiba Pier, Then On to Tokyo Tower

At Takeshiba Pier, enjoy a seaside stroll—rest on a bench now and then, or simply gaze at the water. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing mix of blue sky, the waterfront, and views of Rainbow Bridge.

After enjoying a leisurely stroll around Takeshiba Pier, hop in a taxi and head to Tokyo Tower.

Skytree is impressive too, but Tokyo Tower is still a timeless favorite, surrounded by the greenery of Shiba Park. Be sure to head up to the observation deck and take in the views of Tokyo. Enjoy the geometric yet flowing base of red and white steel while looking out over the city. After browsing the Tokyo Tower souvenir shop, take the train to Yurakucho.

Dinner at Pyonpyonsha Yurakucho: Yakiniku & Morioka Reimen

In Yurakucho, dinner at “Morioka Reimen Pyonpyonsha” is recommended (reservation required). It’s a yakiniku restaurant, but the stylish interior works well for a couple’s date. Order one or two portions of high-grade yakiniku first, then the spicy, delicious Morioka Reimen afterward—which may be a first for many visitors—and you’ll both be impressed, saying “This is delicious .”

Sukiyaki for lunch, yakiniku for dinner—and somehow, it all feels surprisingly manageable.

Tokyo Station Night View from Yurakucho Glass Building: A Hidden Gem

After dinner comes time for just the two of you. The Tokyo International Forum “Glass Building” in front of Yurakucho Station is a surprisingly little-known spot. Entry is free, and the building’s stunning glass architecture creates a beautiful geometric space inside. Even walking upstairs feels a little romantic.

The night view of Tokyo Station from the window is beautiful and well worth seeing. Looking at the station glowing orange from the glass building is a cool, stylish way to close out your date.
