This Gran Class report covers a journey of about 2 hours and 40 minutes from “Morioka” Station to “Tokyo” Station in Gran Class, the highest-class seat on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Enjoying the Shinkansen journey to the fullest (with all-you-can-drink) in Gran Class, which is about 10,000 JPY higher than a regular ticket, is outstanding.

Gran Class features special seats—reclining chairs arranged with plenty of space inside a large train car. Whether two people sit in paired seats or a solo passenger fully enjoys a single seat depends on your travel plan.

For single seats, you will seriously fall asleep during the journey, so watch out! After going to the trouble of riding Gran Class, waking up only at the final destination is no joke. You will likely see pleasant dreams.

It was a delicious dry sake that paired well with the standard dishes.

While drinking Japanese sake, I ordered a Japanese meal (to pair with the sake). The light meals in Gran Class are each delicious and just right as snacks with drinks, but because the portions are small, you must seriously take note.

If you plan to make a full meal out of this alone, it is seriously not enough.

Either eat at the station and enjoy this as a snack, or if you want to eat more inside the Shinkansen, bringing an ekiben (station bento) is recommended. Seriously!

Even so, while the concept of “squid,” “scallop,” and “chicken rice” is chaotic, this bento was delicious! It is one of the recommended station bentos at Morioka Station.

After eating and feeling satisfied, it’s slow, relaxing time—so it’s coffee while drinking beer. Why is that…? Please take your time and enjoy the journey between Morioka and Tokyo.

Waiting while having a drink at a Japanese sake bar inside Morioka Station is also wonderful. In addition, there are shops for Morioka’s famous “Morioka Reimen” and “Morioka Jaja-men.”

Points to Note: Gran Class seats themselves do not have trash cans (there are some in the aisle)

There are trash cans between train cars, but the Gran Class seats themselves do not have “trash cans.” Eating and drinking inside the Shinkansen creates all sorts of trash, so bringing a plastic bag for trash is unexpectedly—a little, super, quite—convenient.

Gran Class is a special seat whose value goes beyond the price. You can’t always take it casually, but riding it on a special trip as a treat to yourself is wonderful.

In this article, based on the author’s own boarding experience and photos, we share a moment in this special space.

Highlights of Tohoku Shinkansen Gran Class (Tokyo → Morioka)

Relaxing Before Boarding at the VIEW GOLD LOUNGE

At Tokyo Station, the “VIEW GOLD LOUNGE” lets you relax before boarding the Shinkansen. It is a special space open only to credit card status holders, Green Car ticket holders, or Gran Class ticket holders.

The upscale feel from the sign alone already lifts your mood. If you have a Gran Class ticket, you’ll want to soak up that elegance while you can.

The lounge is smaller than you might expect, but with few guests there is no waiting, so it still feels comfortable. An attendant shows you to a seat, so you don’t need to hunt for one yourself.

There is a drink menu, and they take your order.

Although there is no alcohol service, you can take a break with delicious free tea and browse your phone in peace until departure.

Gran Class Seats

Stepping into the Gran Class car, the first thing that catches your eye is the generously spaced, luxurious seats. You don’t have to fight over the armrest with your neighbor—it’s a stress-free, roomy setup.

The fully power-adjustable reclining seats move up and down, lean back, and return upright. Be careful not to press the “Attendant Call Button” by mistake. (Almost everyone hits it once.)

Even watching movies on a tablet at leisure, the space feels comfortably open—no sense of being cramped. (The tablet is personal; it is not a Gran Class amenity.)

The amenity slippers are flat, and they feel fine to wear. Being able to take off your shoes and relax is one of Gran Class’s real perks.

There is also plenty of space front to back, so even with your legs crossed you don’t feel cramped ahead. Because there is no net in front of the seat, you can’t stash trash or small items there—something to keep in mind.

All-You-Can-Drink Sparkling Wine

(Note: As of 2024, sparkling wine has been changed to non-alcoholic.)

Inside the car, drinks (including alcohol) are all-you-can-drink (please note that there are Gran Class trains without drink service). You can enjoy various drinks such as beer, wine (red), Japanese sake, whisky, cider (Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen only), plum wine sparkling (Hokuriku Shinkansen only), non-alcoholic beer, non-alcoholic sparkling wine, and more.

If you get too eager to get your money’s worth out of the Gran Class fare and down glass after glass, be careful not to get drunk, miss your stop, and ride all the way to the final station.

Light Meals Provided in Gran Class

Gran Class comes with a “light meal” service (please note that there are Gran Class trains without light meal service). The light meals served in Gran Class are truly “light” meals, so:

Since recent Shinkansen no longer sell bento from an onboard cart, it’s best to buy snacks for drinking or an extra bento before you board.

The Japanese sake “Katsuyama Ken” served in Gran Class has a well-balanced sweetness and dryness, with a refined taste. The ride from Tokyo to Morioka is about 2 to 3 hours—just right for a light izakaya mood and one or two glasses of “Katsuyama Ken.”

Desserts and Sweets

The sweets served after the light meal are another nice touch. Enjoy them at a leisurely pace in your comfortable seat as the Shinkansen rolls on.

Gran Class seats feel ultra-luxurious, with generous width and legroom, so basically anywhere you sit is comfortable. The only caveat: if you’re by the window, you’ll need to mind the aisle-side passenger when you get up for the restroom or similar.

Single Seats Recommended for Solo Travel

For solo travel, Gran Class single seats are recommended. You’re both window-side and aisle-side, so you don’t have to worry about anyone left or right, and you can enjoy the scenery more freely. The aisle side of the seat also has ample space, so the sense of openness is outstanding.

Each ingredient and dish is delicious and elegant. With a distinctly Japanese character, it pairs very well with Japanese sake or refreshing champagne.

Elegant seasoning, the quiche texture is just right, and the risotto and au gratin are lightly set, so all four can be eaten in one bite. (Of course, breaking them apart with chopsticks is also fine.) Pairing them with drinks, I enjoyed them as light Western-style treats.

Delicious Ekiben Between Tokyo Station and Morioka Station

Unfortunately, the light meal in Gran Class is truly light and won’t fill you up, so if you want to eat more, picking up an extra ekiben at Tokyo Station is a good idea. Tokyo Station ekiben are well worth it.

Recommended: Tuna and Ikura Bento

One highly recommended bento is this “Tuna and Ikura Bento.” Seafood in ekiben often tastes a bit dry, but the tuna and ikura here have a fresh sashimi-like quality and are very satisfying.

Above all, as the generous look of the bento suggests, it has real volume and is very filling.
