Walking the Streetscape of Kyoto / Gion-Shijo

Stepping into the side alleys of Kyoto’s Gion, you’re surrounded by atmospheric streets that lead onto cobblestones. Wooden buildings line quiet lanes that feel like old Japan—small rivers run alongside, the trees change with the seasons, and everything sits in harmony with the houses. Simply wandering through this atmosphere is one of the great pleasures of visiting Kyoto.

In Gion’s alleys, you can still sense the atmosphere of traditional Japanese houses.

The Five-Story Pagoda (Yasaka Pagoda) blends into a streetscape unique to Kyoto—a town that draws you in and makes for a wonderful day of walking. It is overflowing with the feel of old Japan.

When night falls, Kyoto’s Gion lights up. The old geisha district takes on a different character after dark—and a beautiful Gion awaits. The streets take on a quiet and enchanting atmosphere.

You might meet a maiko. Even if spotting a real one is hard, many tourists walk around Kyoto in maiko cosplay—so you can still enjoy the atmosphere.

The Beauty of the Town Woven by Rivers—Kamo River and Takase River

Along the Kamo River flowing through Kyoto, couples sit along the riverbank, chatting about the city and about each other. Blessed with water, nature, people, and history, the Kamo River—which has long watched over Kyoto—seems to hold the flow of time, and you want to keep gazing at it. In spring, kawayuka (river terraces) that get people excited also open.

A meal on a wooden platform jutting out over Kyoto’s Kamo River is a seasonal experience unique to Kyoto, where you can enjoy Kyoto’s atmosphere along with Kyoto cuisine. Savoring that food in a refreshing breeze is hard to resist.

A short walk into town from the Kamo River brings you to the pleasant Takase River and its riverside alleys. Japanese houses, the small river, and the trees along the bank make for a pleasant and relaxing stroll along the Takase River.

When you are tired from walking, tea at a cafe overlooking the Takase River is also wonderful. Take your time and enjoy the clear, beautiful atmosphere there.

Enjoying Shrines and Temples in Gion-Shijo

Kyoto has an incredible number of shrines and temples.

Strolling along the atmospheric Takase River alley, you soon reach Tatsumi Daimyojin, a famous photo spot often used in TV dramas. Tucked into a corner where cobblestone alleys meet, as if blending into the town, “Tatsumi Daimyojin”—southeast (tatsumi) of Kyoto Imperial Palace—has long been cherished as a local guardian shrine, and you may occasionally see maiko and geiko praying here for progress in the performing arts.

Heading toward Gion-Shijo, “Yasaka Shrine” comes into view. At the end of Kyoto’s Shijo-dori, it is one of Kyoto’s best-known shrines. Centered on a main hall designated as a National Important Cultural Property, it enshrines many deities across nearly 20 shrine buildings, including “Utsukushigozen-sha,” associated with beauty.

Together with the adjacent Maruyama Park, spending a day on the tree-lined walking paths also sounds like fun.

Continuing along Gion’s Hanamikoji, you reach “Kennin-ji,” which beautifully embodies Japanese aesthetics through its architecture and garden. Kennin-ji holds many Important Cultural Properties and is home to the “Folding Screen of Wind and Thunder Gods.” The two screens, each made up of two panels, show the Wind God and Thunder God facing each other—an awe-inspiring sight.

On the ceiling of Kennin-ji’s Dharma Hall (Hatto), the “Twin Dragons” painting shows two dragons dancing and entwined. It dominates the hall and leaves visitors in awe.

Kennin-ji’s garden spreads out in the spirit of a dry landscape (karesansui) garden, with a stroll route you can enjoy in every season. Taking in the garden while spending time with the temple’s Important Cultural Properties makes for a wonderful day in Kyoto.

If you want to cut bad ties and pray for good ones, a visit to the relationship-cutting shrine “Yasui Konpiragu” is also worthwhile.

Perhaps there are relationships you want to leave behind, and good connections you hope will come. Settling the past can mean meeting something new, and marking a milestone can mean setting out to find a new self—say a prayer and carry it into a better tomorrow.

There is a hole you pass through to cut “bad relationships.” Go through carefully so you do not get stuck.

Chinese Cuisine in Gion-Shijo Overlooking the Kamo River

Kyoto cuisine on a Kamo River terrace is wonderful, of course, but Gion-Shijo and Kawaramachi also have many stylish restaurants. At the foot of Shijo-ohashi Bridge, the long-established Chinese restaurant “Tohka Saikan Main Shop” serves Beijing cuisine in a Spanish Baroque Western-style building and keeps its old traditions alive.

Dining on Chinese cuisine on a riverside terrace overlooking the Kamo River in spring, or enjoying it from fifth-floor terrace seats overlooking the river in summer, is one enjoyable way to have lunch on a Gion stroll.

Gion-Shijo Touring Experience Report

June 2018 Visit – Tohka Saikan, Kennin-ji, Yasui Konpiragu, Rokudo no Tsuji, Rokuharamitsu-ji

Around 11:30 – Beginning at Tohka Saikan from Shijo-o-hashi Bridge

I arrived at Gion-Shijo Station around noon, ready for a relaxing day of sightseeing, and began my walk in Pontocho.

Feeling hungry, I headed straight to Tohka Saikan. Shown to upper-floor terrace seats, I had a Chinese meal looking out at the Kamo River and the Kyoto streetscape. The view was fantastic, and the beer tasted even better with the scenery.

Around 13:00 – Sightseeing Tatsumi Daimyojin While Strolling Alleys

Enjoying Shijo’s alleys and Kyoto’s old streetscape, I walked to Tatsumi Daimyojin. It was crowded as a photo spot, but I took pictures between gaps in the flow of people. It is also considered a spiritual power spot and has appeared in movies and TV dramas.

Around 13:30 – From Hanamikoji to Kennin-ji

Crossing the small bridge in front of Tatsumi Daimyojin leads to Hanamikoji. It is a street where you can fully savor the atmosphere of Gion, so representative of Kyoto—pleasant for strolling and sightseeing, with dango to eat and souvenirs to buy.

I walked through Kennin-ji, head temple of the Rinzai sect’s Kennin-ji school in Gion, founded in 1202 by Eisai Zenji as Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple. On the grounds are highlights such as the Folding Screen of Wind and Thunder Gods (replica) and the grand Twin Dragons on the Dharma Hall ceiling. I looked around in the quiet, calm atmosphere, taking in Kyoto’s history and beauty.

Around 14:30 – Short Rest at a Teahouse

Walking from Kennin-ji toward Yasui Konpiragu, I found an atmospheric cafe called “Kyowa” just before the shrine and stopped in.

A cup of delicious coffee was just what I needed to rest my tired feet. With Kyoto-style drinks on the menu, such as a matcha cream latte, I took a breather and enjoyed a mix of Japanese and Western tea.

Around 15:00 – Severing Bad Relationships at Yasui Konpiragu

I went to Yasui Konpiragu, a place to pray for cutting bad ties and binding good ones. The bold design was interesting. Passing through the stone torii, the “Relationship-Severing & Relationship-Binding Monument (Ishidera)” was right there.

The Relationship-Severing & Relationship-Binding Monument has an atmosphere that could appear in Jujutsu Kaisen, but passing through the hole is said to cut bad relationships, so many people line up. Not wanting to regret later thinking, “I should have cut that tie after all,” I lined up and made it through—though I also worried whether my stomach would get stuck in the hole.

Around 16:00 – Stroll Ending at Rokudo no Tsuji, Rokuharamitsu-ji

I walked to Rokudo no Tsuji, within walking distance of Yasui Konpiragu. There were almost no tourists there, and I went alone through quiet alleys, but the streets were so atmospheric that walking itself was fun.

Rokudo no Tsuji is said to hold the boundary between this world and the next, so it takes a bit of courage to visit.

Next I went to Rokuharamitsu-ji, opened in 951 by Kuya Shonin. Known as a temple linked to Kuya—the “Saint of the Market” who spread the Nembutsu among ordinary people—it enshrines a standing statue of Kuya Shonin, a National Important Cultural Property.

Because photographing the actual standing statue of Kuya Shonin is not allowed, I showed a poster displayed on the grounds. The figure with six Amida Buddhas emerging from his mouth visualizes the teaching that chanting the Nembutsu makes those words appear as Buddhas. The dynamic expression and strong presence are awe-inspiring, and the more quietly you face it, the more deeply Kuya Shonin’s faith comes through.

When you visit Rokuharamitsu-ji, this Buddhist statue is well worth viewing carefully.

Around 18:00 – Moving to Kyoto Station, Eating Famous “Nishin Soba,” and Ending Kyoto Sightseeing

Leaving Rokuharamitsu-ji, I returned to Kyoto Station by train and shopped inside the station until my return Shinkansen. Getting hungry, I had the famous “Nishin Soba,” which marked the end of a day of walking in Kyoto that began in Gion-Shijo.

Summary: The Charm of Strolling the Streets of Gion-Shijo

A walk through Gion-Shijo is full of Kyoto’s charm: alleys woven from Japanese houses, rivers, trees, and cobblestones. Along the way, shrines and temples add their own appeal. Resting at stylish riverside cafes and having lunch on a terrace overlooking Kyoto—strolling Gion-Shijo like this makes for a very rewarding day.
