The name comes from the chick’s “piyo-piyo” chirp plus “pudding,” the star of the filling. It looks soft and cute, but when you taste it you get the pudding’s soft texture, the bavarois’s smooth creaminess, and the sponge’s light, fluffy texture — a dessert that actually tastes good.

Cut open, you can clearly see the pudding inside and the bavarois surrounding it. Looking cute isn’t the whole story, which is why people keep loving Piyorin.

2. Take it home from Piyorin shop at Nagoya Station

For takeout, head to Piyorin shop on Nagoya Umaimon Dori (Hirokoji Exit) at JR Nagoya Station. It’s about a one-minute walk from the Central or Hirokoji ticket gates. Open daily, 9:00–20:00. Classic Piyorin is 450 yen tax-included; strawberry, tea, chocolate, and other flavors are 480 yen tax-included (prices as listed on the official site).

Piyorin is sold at around 9:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00. Quantities are limited, so popular sale times often mean long queues. Baked sweets, marshmallows, and goods are also sold, so it’s a convenient place to pick up souvenirs.

3. Eat it at Piyorin village

For eating in, head to Piyorin village on Nagoya Central Dori at JR Nagoya Station — about one minute from the Central ticket gate. Retail is 6:30–21:30; the café is 7:00–22:00 (last order 21:30), open every day.

The café-only “village Piyorin” (750 yen tax-included) is made without the bavarois and focuses on the pudding, with caramel served on the side. There are also plate menus and drinks, so it’s an easy café stop for photos. Some seat times are reservation-based; if you expect crowds, check the official booking info.

The café also adds cute Piyorin-themed touches to its drinks. It’s not just the Piyorin itself — the whole table can feel like a little Piyorin world, which is part of the fun.

Located right next to the East Gate of Nagoya City Subway’s “Fushimi Station.” You can go straight into the underground street after getting off the subway, but heading up to the surface once and then down these (suspicious-looking) stairs into the underground is also part of the fun.

Oden Specialty Restaurant “Getsuran” (Recommended) Visited June 2026

“Getsuran” is a cozy shop run by a landlady (Mama) and female staff. The atmosphere is soft, and because the counter runs along the street, you can see at a glance whether seats are open, making it easy for solo visitors to enter and be warmly welcomed.

Of course, parties and groups can also enjoy drinking at the table seats in front of the shop.

Features of “Getsuran”

• The stewed “oden” is simply delicious and pairs well with alcohol.
• The landlady and female staff offer a soft, comfortable environment.
• Because the counter lines the front of the shop, it is easy for solo visitors to enter (you can look inside the shop before entering rather than going into the back).
• A simple, clean interior, typical of a shop run by women.

Recommended Dishes at “Getsuran”

“Oden Daikon Radish,” stewed until its softness really stands out. The flavor has thoroughly soaked in, and its soft texture makes it satisfying to eat.

The landlady’s handmade “Nagaimo Yam with Salted Kelp” features a crunchy texture that pairs exquisitely with the salty taste of salted kelp. It is an exquisite snack that goes well with beer and shochu, and a must-try.

“Getsuran” Experience Report (Visited June 2026)

On a certain day in June, I visited Fushimi Underground Street for coverage. At “Getsuran,” I could see empty seats at the counter running along the wide-open entrance facing the walkway. Drawn in by the solo-friendly atmosphere and the smiles of the landlady and female staff, I was pulled right into the restaurant.

Since it was an oden shop, I ordered the “2 Oden Pieces + Appetizer + Draft Beer Set” (1,500 JPY). As the conversation picked up, I ordered an additional single beer. Talking happily with the landlady and staff (Miyuki-chan and Yurika-chan) over delicious oden, I had a fun time for a total of 2,200 JPY in just under an hour! It was a great restaurant.

Because it is directly connected to the East Gate of Nagoya City Subway’s “Fushimi Station,” you can reach it without getting wet even on rainy days. “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka,” located in Sakae, Nagoya, is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy carefully grilled unagi (eel) in various ways. Loved by locals and thoroughly satisfying for tourists, it is a great place for unagi and hitsumabushi.

The shop’s greatest feature is the exquisite unagi—crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside—paired with ochazuke finished with “umeboshi” (pickled plum). At first glance, it seems like an unexpected combination, but the fragrance of the unagi and the mellow acidity of the Nanko umeboshi harmonize exquisitely, so you can enjoy it refreshingly all the way to the last bite without growing tired of the taste.

Hitsumabushi with Crisply Finished Unagi and “Umeboshi”

When it comes to Nagoya cuisine, hitsumabushi comes to mind, and the unagi at “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” is finished with a fragrant, crispy skin and plump, juicy meat. It is truly outstanding unagi and very delicious.

In the ochazuke, combining it with “Nanko ume (umeboshi)” is a key feature; the acidity of the umeboshi, the bitterness of the tea, and the sweetness of the unagi and rice come together for a very delicious hitsumabushi. Once you taste it, the flavor is unforgettable—enough that you will want to visit “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” every time you come to Nagoya.

“Unaju” Grilled Crispy Outside and Fluffy Inside Is Also Extremely Delicious

Even as unaju, it is just as delicious—or even more so; the grilling, the flavor of the unagi, and the rice soaked in sauce are irresistible, making it an unaju you can thoroughly enjoy with a sprinkle of tinglingly spicy sansho pepper. It is also nice that sizes can be chosen in fine steps by the amount of unagi: “Tokujo (1.5 eels),” “Jo (1 eel),” “Hana (3/4 eel),” and “Kohana (1/2 eel).”

Also Enjoyable Paired with a Glass of Wine

At “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka,” wine by the glass is also on the menu, and it pairs delightfully with the unaju here. Enjoying it as an aperitif is fine, as is sipping wine alongside the unagi; being able to enjoy such pairings is also one aspect of Nagoya culture.

Atmospheric Interior and Spacious Table Seats

The interior is designed in a good old Japanese style, creating a calm atmosphere. The table seats are fairly spacious, so you can eat with relative ease whether you come as a group of 2, 4, or 6.

Points to Note About “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” (It Has Become Famous, and Waiting in Line Is Now Essentially Required)

If you go to a famous unagi and hitsumabushi restaurant in Nagoya, you generally need to be ready to wait in line no matter which shop you visit. In the past, “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” was famous among connoisseurs but was not widely known to the general public, so depending on the day of the week and time of day, you could sometimes get in without waiting. However, reviews now show that waiting in (quite a long) line is common.

Even though there is a line, the staff are soft-spoken, and you can wait after writing down your name. If you are going to eat truly delicious unagi and hitsumabushi in Nagoya, waiting in line is something to expect to some extent, but even so, it is genuinely one of our recommended shops.

The shop is located in Sakae, Naka Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. By public transportation, Sakae Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway is the nearest station. It is on the 2nd floor of Sanritsu North Building, about a 5-minute walk from Exit S8 of Sakaechika.

There are several unagi restaurants (street-level shops) nearby, but they are different places, so please be careful not to go to the wrong one.
