“Getsuran” is a cozy shop run by a landlady (Mama) and female staff. The atmosphere is soft, and because the counter is installed along the street, the availability of seats can be seen at a glance, making it easy for solo visitors to enter and be warmly welcomed.

Of course, multiple guests and groups can also enjoy drinking at the table seats in front of the shop.

Features of “Getsuran”

• The stewed “oden” is simply delicious and pairs well with alcohol.
• The landlady and female staff offer a soft, comfortable environment.
• Because the counter lines the front of the shop, it is easy for solo visitors to enter (you can look inside the shop before entering rather than going into the back).

“Oden Daikon Radish,” stewed until its softness stands out. The flavor is thoroughly soaked in, and its soft texture makes it satisfying to eat.

The landlady’s handmade “Nagaimo Yam with Salted Kelp” features a crunchy texture combined exquisitely with the salty taste of salted kelp. It is an exquisite snack dish that pairs well with beer and shochu, and is a must-try item.

“Getsuran” Experience Report (Visited June 2026)

On a certain day in June, I visited Fushimi Underground Street for coverage. At “Getsuran,” I could see empty seats at the counter running parallel along the wide-open entrance facing the walkway. Drawn in by the solo-friendly atmosphere and the smiles of the landlady and female staff, I was attracted right into the restaurant.

Since it was an oden shop, I ordered the “2 Oden Pieces + Appetizer + Draft Beer Set” (1,500 JPY). As the conversation picked up, I ordered an additional single beer. While talking happily with the landlady and staff (Miyuki-chan and Yurika-chan) over delicious oden, I spent a fun time for a total of 2,200 JPY for just under an hour! It was a great restaurant.

Because it is directly connected to the East Gate of Nagoya City Subway’s “Fushimi Station,” you can access it without getting wet even on rainy days. It is in an excellent location, just one station (approx. 2 to 3 minutes) by subway from Nagoya Station or Sakae Station, making it easy to drop by after work or between sightseeing.

While holding the face of a historic worship spot, once you step into the arcade, you will find a multi-hobby shopping street that suits people of all tastes: multinational street food, retro culture, izakayas that are bustling from daytime, and several maid cafes. That is Osu Arcade Shopping Street.

Based on the author’s actual experiences, this article introduces the charms of “Osu Shopping Street” starting from “Osu Kannon.”

Worship at Osu Kannon and Its Historic Appearance

As a symbolic spot of the Osu area, “Osu Kannon” is a temple characterized by its vivid vermilion main hall. Although it is by no means large, it is a temple just right for stopping by to pray.

Because it is located right next to Osu Shopping Street, many people stop by to pray between walks, making it a temple visited by many people regardless of weekdays or weekends.

At shrines, the rule is “two bows, two claps, one bow,” but since Osu Kannon is a temple, you pray by “quietly joining your hands together (gassho).”

Osu Kannon is located in Naka Ward, Nagoya City. For access, exit Exit 2 of “Osu Kannon Station” on the Subway Tsurumai Line, and it is right in front of you. Access from Nagoya Station and Sakae Station is also good, and because it is adjacent to the shopping street, it is in a location that is easy to use as a starting point for walking.

A Vast Arcade Street with Everything and Playful Monuments

Starting right next to Osu Kannon, a huge “Osu Shopping Street” arcade extending for a total length of about 1.7 kilometers spreads out.

Charms of Nagoya Castle

Majestic Main Keep, the Verdigris Roof Reflecting History, and the Shining Golden Shachihoko

The absolute symbol of Nagoya Castle is the main keep (Tenshukaku). Its majestic appearance overwhelms visitors, and looking up, its roof is covered in “verdigris” nurtured over many years.

At the top, the shine of the “Golden Shachihoko” comes into view. Truly a work of art. Set against the blue sky, the beautiful contrast woven by history and tradition is undoubtedly a “photogenic” spot.

The interior of the main keep has been reconstructed with reinforced concrete, allowing visitors to enjoy various exhibits and the view from the keep.

As of 2026, the inside of the main keep cannot be toured because it is undergoing earthquake resistance work.

A Modern Miracle! The Gorgeous and Splendid “Honmaru Goten Palace”

A tourist spot inside the grounds of Nagoya Castle is the “Honmaru Goten Palace.” Inside, with wooden architecture recalling those days, as a residence for the Owari Domain lord and a place where shogun stayed, you can feel the lord’s space of those days and Japanese beauty. Touring the inside takes about 15 to 20 minutes, offering more to see than imagined, making it a tourist area you definitely want to step into if you go to Nagoya Castle.

Inside the Honmaru Goten Palace, there are multiple luxurious Japanese-style rooms that you can walk around and view (you cannot enter inside the rooms, but you can look from the walkway). Photography is OK (however, flash is prohibited), and just looking at the wall decorations, the beauty of the sliding doors, and the tatami flooring is overwhelming.

“Stone Walls” and “Important Cultural Property Corner Towers (Sumi-yagura)” Feeling Historical Romance

In addition to the main keep, the “corner towers (sumi-yagura)” soaring at the corners of the castle grounds are also well worth seeing. While having an elegant appearance like a small castle, their true nature is an impregnable “military fortress.”

Drop Chutes (Ishi-otoshi)

Please look at the section resembling a slightly protruding bay window at the corner of the tower in the photo (right above the stone wall). This is a defense trap called “Ishi-otoshi” for dropping stones or firing guns at enemies climbing up the stone wall.

Beautiful Stone Walls in Kiyomasa Style

Supporting the tower are splendid stone walls said to have been directed by Kiyomasa Kato. Built with a method called “Ogi no Kobai” (fan slope), which forms a steep incline while drawing a beautiful arc toward the top, it not only blocks enemy intrusion but also has an extremely high aesthetic perfection and beauty.

“Ninomaru Garden” Showing Beauty in Every Season

Spreading north of the Ninomaru Palace, a quiet space full of atmosphere unfolds, switching from the bustle inside the castle. If you go in spring, it is a garden with spreading fresh greenery, where you can enjoy feeling as comfortable as walking in nature.

The dynamic stone arrangements incorporating the “Karesansui” (dry landscape) style, which intentionally leaves the pond without water, are also appealing. The “Karetaki-iwagumi” (dry waterfall stone arrangement) using huge stones, said to be modeled after Chinese ink paintings, has an overwhelming presence even though water is not flowing.

“Kinshachi Yokocho” to Fill Your Stomach in the Castle Town

On the Main Gate side and East Gate side, there are two themed areas called “Kinshachi Yokocho.” In an atmospheric townscape reproducing the castle town of the Edo period, famous restaurants representing Nagoya stand side-by-side as a major gourmet spot.

Traditional Flavors Gather! Main Gate Side “Yoshinao Zone”

Named after the first lord of the Owari Domain, Yoshinao Tokugawa, this area is lined with pure Japanese-style wooden buildings, making you feel as if you have wandered into an Edo-period castle town. Nagoya Castle is located in Naka Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and access by train is convenient. It arrives in about a 5-minute walk from Exit 7 of “Nagoyajo Station” on the Subway Meijo Line. The admission fee is 500 JPY for adults, and tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth to enter directly.

You can also go by taxi from Nagoya Station for about 1,400 to 1,800 JPY, so if you are traveling with a large group, a taxi might be easier and better.

The sauce highlights the aroma and beautiful gloss, making it so delicious you can’t stop eating rice. Eating it in the Nagoya-style way as “Hitsumabushi” lets you savor Nagoya gourmet even more.

What you want to enjoy together is Kinshachi Nagoya Red Miso Lager Beer. A beer with a rich, deep flavor, it firmly holds up against the strongly flavored eel rice, letting you enjoy a combination of outstanding deliciousness.

Souvenir Shop “Shachi Jokyo”

“Kinshachi Yokocho Muneharu Zone,” a commercial facility modeled after Nagoya Castle’s castle town, is a modern street that sells soft-serve ice cream wrapped in Nagoya-like lavish gold leaf. It is a soft-serve ice cream you want to bite into gold leaf once as a memory of Nagoya and a topic for conversation.

“Ninja Ice Cream” is a creative dessert with intricate decorations modeled after “ninjas” associated with castles, sparking curiosity and being cute. With a design featuring adorable eyes peeking out, toppings imitating forehead protectors and sword hilts, and a prominently placed shuriken, it feels like a waste to eat it.

“Hitsumabushi Hanaoka,” located in Sakae, Nagoya, is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy carefully grilled unagi (eel) in various ways. Loved by locals and leaving tourists thoroughly satisfied, it is a great shop for unagi and hitsumabushi.

The shop’s greatest feature is the exquisite unagi—crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside—along with ochazuke enjoyed with “umeboshi” (pickled plum) to match. At first glance, it seems like an unexpected combination, but the fragrance of the unagi and the mellow acidity of the Nanko umeboshi harmonize exquisitely, allowing you to enjoy it refreshingly without growing tired of the taste until the very last bite.

In this article, based on photos taken during the author’s actual personal experience, we introduce the charms of “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka.”

Hitsumabushi with Crispy-Finished Unagi and “Umeboshi” Included

Speaking of Nagoya cuisine, hitsumabushi comes to mind, and the unagi at “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” is finished with a fragrant, crispy skin and plump, juicy meat. It is truly brilliant unagi and very delicious.

In ochazuke, enjoying it combined with “Nanko ume (umeboshi)” is a key feature; the acidity of the umeboshi, the bitterness of the tea, and the sweetness of the unagi and rice overlap, resulting in a very delicious hitsumabushi. This flavor is unforgettable once eaten, to the extent that it makes you want to visit “Hitsumabushi Hanaoka” every time you come to Nagoya.

“Unaju” with a Crispy-Outside, Fluffy-Inside Grill is Also Extremely Delicious

Even when eaten as unaju, the deliciousness remains unchanged—or is even more delicious; the level of grilling, the deliciousness of the unagi, and the rice soaked in sauce are irresistible, making it an unaju you can enjoy delightfully with a sprinkle of tinglingly spicy sansho pepper. It is also appreciated that sizes can be chosen finely according to the amount of unagi: “Tokujo (1.5 eels),” “Jo (1 eel),” “Hana (3/4 eel),” and “Kohana (1/2 eel).”
